Basic Explanation

Every human voice functions according to specific laws of nature. These laws determine how all instruments—including the human voice—must be built and operated to function correctly. When we align our technique with these natural rules, we unlock a level of freedom that allows us to sing the music we love without limitation.

The Piano String Analogy

To understand the voice, it helps to look at a piano. A piano has strings of varying lengths and thicknesses: short, thin, taut strings produce high pitches, while long, thick, loose strings produce lower pitches. Our vocal folds operate on this exact same principle.

The Two Muscle Systems

We have two basic muscle systems in our larynx that determine how we speak and sing. These systems produce what are commonly known as the two primary registers:

  • Chest Register: The vocal cords are vibrating in a way that is long, thick, and loose.
  • Falsetto Register: Less of the cord mass is vibrating; the vibrating portion is shorter, thinner, and more taut.

Coordination and Results

Healthy singing is not about choosing one register over the other, but about developing and coordinating these two muscle systems. When they work in a healthy relationship, the singer experiences specific sensations:

  • Freedom and ease accompanied by healthy, balanced effort.
  • Efficient breath management (no wasted air).
  • A lack of constriction in the throat.
  • Complete volume control (the ability to get louder or softer at will).
  • Crisp, understandable vowels and consonants.

Conclusion: Set Free by Nature

When we know, understand, and follow the rules of nature, we are set free from the struggle of "making" a sound. Instead, we allow the muscles to do what they were designed to do. This coordination is the key to making all sorts of healthy, "cool" sounds and enjoying a lifelong relationship with your voice.
